Purpose of the study

With this study, the researchers want to demonstrate that the drug mifepristone 50 mg is a well-functioning and safe contraceptive.

This medicine does not contain estrogen and progestogen hormones that are present in the 'regular' contraceptive pill, patch, vaginal ring, injection and the hormone IUD or rod.

We therefore do not expect any side effects such as with these products.

Participants in this study use mifepristone 50 mg once a week for 1 year as their only method of contraception.

The researchers:

  • want to demonstrate that the chance of pregnancy is very small
  • want to confirm that the drug is safe and does not cause serious health problems
  • expect fewer side effects than with conventional contraceptives containing hormones
  • want to know how taking 1 tablet per week is experienced

If this research shows that mifepristone 50 mg is a good contraceptive, then registration with the authorities is the goal.

This means there will be more choice in contraceptives in the future.
