At the start and after 3, 6 and 12 months, liver functions are checked because mifepristone is broken down in the liver (a blood sample is taken for this purpose).
Just like when using the 'normal' pill, liver functions sometimes change a little, so this is monitored extra closely. If the lining of the uterus has thickened at 3, 6 or 12 months, an examination with a Pipelle is performed.
What does an examination with a Pipelle entail:
Using a thin tube, some mucous membrane from the uterus is sucked away through th vagina (with the legd spread) for further examination.
So far, malignant changes have never been found with the use of mifepristone. Sometimes the mucous membrane changes temporarily benign, this is called PAEC (Progesterone receptor modulator Associated Endometrial changes). If PAEC is found, an ultrasound is repeated three months after the end of the study.
