Pregnant while taking mifepristone 50 mg

The researchers expect that the chance of pregnancy is very small and will increase with proper use (and not forgetting) of once a week mifepristone 50 mg. But just like with the use of other contraceptives, there is always a risk of pregnancy. Because periods are probably not or hardly present anymore, one should do a monthly pregnancy test.

If a pregnancy does occur, this should be reported to the nurse/doctor in the hospital as soon as possible reported. This person will make an ultrasound to see when the pregnancy occurred and, together with the participant, determine how mifepristone has been used for a long time during pregnancy.

After providing further information, it is up to the participant to terminate or continue the pregnancy.

If an abortion is chosen, this can be done by making an appointment at an abortion clinic. Sometimes treatment is also possible in hospital. You do not have to pay for an abortion, which also means that the deductible is not used.

If you choose to keep the pregnancy, this can be done safely, although there may be a greater risk of miscarriage. This is not well known and may depend on the number of mifepristone tablets used during pregnancy. The risk of congenital abnormalities does not appear to be increased, but large studies are lacking.

The website of the Lareb side effects center www.lareb.nl reports that research in 270 women showed no more congenital abnormalities when using mifepristone during pregnancy than in women who had not used mifepristone. Two smaller studies did show slightly more birth defects, but these may have been caused by concurrent use of a drug that causes uterine contractions or some other reason.

If it is decided to carry the pregnancy to term, the researchers would like to receive information about how the pregnancy is progressing. You have to give permission to request the data from the obstetrician or gynecologist.
