When do I first take mifepristone?

  •  In all cases, take a pregnancy test on your starting date and only start if the test is negative.
  • Contraceptive pill/patch/Nuvaring:
    • When using with a week-off period: start immediately after the last mifepristone tablet/patch/ring and do not have a week-off period
    • When using without a week-off period: start mifepristone at any time without a week-off period.
    • You are immediately protected.
  • Copper IUD:
    • Start mifepristone on the first day of your menstrual cycle. You are immediately protected.
    • Have the copper IUD removed within 5 days of the start of your menstrual cycle.
    • If the copper IUD is removed before starting mifepristone: use additional condoms until the start.
    • No unprotected sex for 7 days before removing the copper IUD if it is not removed during your menstrual cycle (there is a risk of pregnancy due to possible fertilization).
  • Mirena IUD/Implanon:
    • Start mifepristone on the day of removal
    • Use condoms for 7 days afterward; after that, you are protected.
    • Make sure you have not had unprotected sex in the 7 days before removal.
